This is a project that was informed by the need to connect students who are pursuing different career choices and professionals in the industry and telling stories about it. The project seeks to train creatives through social action by teaching them digital story telling skills to boost the already existing participatory media processes. They will be trained on how to create and maintain a blog, upload and share digital photos and make videos using community media/new media as tools for advocacy on various issues affecting the youth. It involves using innovative communication and intervention programs like online forums, debates, theatre and photo/art exhibitions etc. The participants exchange best practices in regard to their experience and become part of the global conversation by virtue of their content being on the internet. Use of digital technology will be the hallmark of the project.

The externship will provide students and young people with an opportunity to explore and learn about various careers. The program involves spending a full day or part of the day with a mentor at their place of work learning what a typical day is like. The mentor also gives the extern an opportunity to ask specific questions they may have about a particular field of work and help them expand their professional network. The program clearly identifies the target group to serve, their needs and the opportunities available for them. The program is based on the flexibility of the mentor and extern’s schedule. We hope to help students and the youth discover themselves and reach their full productive potential as professionals and as individuals hence mould them into able leaders of their fields who society can depend on. The purpose is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and development of the society.

The first of the series of Digital Storytelling externship program is the Photography 101 which is a 5 part program that kicked off on 7th March 2015 where we hooked up the externs with professional photographers and they were able to learn that photography is more than point and shoot and goes far beyond selfies. The externs then get to write about their experience and what they’ve learned after every session. Participants of the photography 101 are;
